New Issue Brief Highlights the Role of School-based Health Centers in Health Care Delivery

School counselor and teenage student sitting face-to-face in a classroom setting, having a supportive conversation.

Aurrera Health was pleased to contribute to research that supported the production of a recent issue brief on school-based health centers (SBHCs) from the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC). The brief examines how Medicaid policies across five states (Arkansas, California, Michigan, Missouri, and New York) support or inhibit access to behavioral health services provided by SBHCs. Aurrera Health worked with MACPAC to review state Medicaid policies and interview key stakeholders to identify common challenges in care delivery and potential solutions that would support access to care.

This is the second MACPAC publication on school-based health services informed by research conducted by Aurrera Health. A previous issue brief on school-based services for students enrolled in Medicaid was released in March 2024. Both publications highlight the important role school settings play in supporting student access to physical and behavioral health care services and explore opportunities to expand this crucial access.
