REPORT: Substance Use in California: Prevalence and Treatment

January 2022

The health care system is moving toward acknowledging substance use disorders (SUD) as chronic illnesses, yet only about 10% of people with an SUD in the last year received treatment. Overdose deaths from both opioids and psychostimulants, such as amphetamines, are soaring. Prepared for the California Health Care Foundation, Aurrera Health authors used the most recent data available to provide an overview of substance use and addiction in California in this publication. Topics include prevalence of substance use, emergency department visits, deaths, and treatment.
